Backup Software: How to Keep Your Important Data Safe
by Bridget.Giacinto on Oct 23, 2013 8:22:16 PM
Losing important data and files may feel like a complete violation similar to an actual robbing of your home. Whether you lose your files through a virus, system crash, or hacker, the feeling remains the same. Although the files on your computer may be intangible, they’re a huge part of the lives of most Americans as we become more reliant on all things digital. Protecting your important data is a big part of maintaining your sanity and giving you peace of mind.
Unfortunately, many Americans avoid computer backup until it’s too late. Most don’t develop a real sense of urgency for protecting data until it’s already been destroyed or stolen. Along with a regular backup of your servers and PCs with the right backup software, you can do the following things to protect your important data and equipment.
Be Proactive
Install proactive software protection on your computer to keep it safe from malware and viruses. Spyware and viruses can enter your computer and quickly slow down your equipment, lower the function level of your machine, and even destroy or corrupt your important data. Anti-malware software is the first step in a protection plan for every computer you own.
Install a Firewall
In an effort to block dangerous viruses, spyware, and programs from taking up residence on your computer, use a firewall for added security. You can often purchase software that includes a firewall, and you may have one built into your network router in order to further increase your level of security.
Be Cautious
In the age of spam and junk mail, you probably end up with hundreds of emails every week from people you don’t know. You should always be cautious of an email from an unknown source, as many viruses are spread through email. If you receive an email with an attachment but don’t recognize the sender, never open the attachment.
Unfortunately, some viruses enter your system through an email from a friend. Always be cautious when you open attachments whether you know the sender or not.
Surf Cautiously
Avoid websites of ill repute. Only shop or browse websites with a good reputation and avoid giving out any personal information on an unfamiliar website. Spyware is often distributed through these sites and may destroy or hamper your computer’s functioning.
Update Your System
Regular updates for your system are necessary to increase the level of security you have around your important data. When performing a software update, look for holes that hackers use to enter your network. Microsoft and Apple both release regular updates in an effort to stay ahead of hackers, but it’s up to you to keep your computer updated.
Back-Up Your Files
Along with paying close attention to who has access to your machine, you should be backing up your important information on a regular basis. This can be done manually or with backup software from NovaStor to make the process more convenient for the average computer user. Saving an additional backup of your data (or creating a disaster recovery image) ensures that you can access all your important folders and files even after your computer is destroyed or compromised.
